The Day of Silent Social Media is a day to keep all social media silent- no posting, surfing, liking, etc.
Technology affects adults and teens in many ways. Excessive time on social media is simply too much screen time, which can lead to unhealthy sleep patterns. Too much screen time can also lead to extreme effects on teens, such as obesity, anxiety and depression.
Teens also have relationships strictly online- they have never met in person. This can be very dangerous, especially if they choose to meet each other. There are many stalkers and pedophiles on the internet posing as teens. They message other teens acting as a friend, and quickly find out their name, age, school, and eventually their address.
Another big social media problem is cyber bullying. Cyber bullying starts with rude or hurtful comments on Facebook or similar social media sites and eventually leads to teens harming themselves or others.
We chose to focus on social media's impact on teens because about 95% have one or more accounts on popular social media sites. About 28% of those people spend 4 or more hours a day online. Some of these hours are spent communicating with friends, but much of it is just to pass the time; to eliminate boredom.
Keeping off of social media for one day will remind people to spend time with family or friends, instead of being secluded from your community. It will also eliminate bullying and hurtful messages. This will trigger a change in how much we use social media in the future, remembering how the Day of Silent Social Media made us disconnect from the internet and instead connect with our communities.
